i'd have fought the world for you

a business had forgotten to disable the automated sprinkler system for the winter, and when i saw the thin sheet of cracking ice formed tightly across the sidewalk, it shook me gently into this time of year.

always, always this time of year. i am carried by the one who has never forgotten me, who has seen each year press heavy on the gas until light speed, turn the ignition off, and spin around. then a breath, and we are back on the track. i am redeemed. i am renewed.

and this year, with a tiny life that manifests in spite of me.

since that moment in the ice, i occasionally look over my shoulder to see if you are there. and the night air is as empty as it is cold.
